Buyers sometimes treat gabion mattresses and gabion baskets as interchangeable because both use stone-filled wire systems, but their project roles differ. Mattresses are usually used for erosion control and shallow slope or channel protection, while baskets are more often used for retaining, landscaping, and wall structures.

Profile height and site behavior drive the choice

A low-profile mattress behaves differently from a deeper basket under water flow, settlement, and visible wall conditions. The buyer should define site geometry, expected load, stone size, and installation method before choosing only by price.

RFQs should match the civil application

• State project use, unit size, cell layout, and coating expectation.
• Confirm whether woven or welded construction is preferred.
• Ask how flat-packed bundles are labeled for site installation sequence.

The right gabion format is the one that matches the project geometry and performance goal, not simply the one with more wire per unit.
