Plain Steel vs Galvanized Welded Mesh: Which One Should Buyers Specify?

Compare corrosion risk, project life, coating route, and cost when choosing plain steel or galvanized welded mesh for industrial use.

Base steel and coating route should match the service environment

Plain steel welded mesh can be suitable for short-life indoor use, further fabrication, or projects where the buyer will apply a later coating step. Galvanized welded mesh is usually the safer choice when outdoor exposure, humidity, or long maintenance cycles matter. The decision should come from the service environment, not from unit price alone.

Buyers should ask how the zinc protection is applied

Galvanized mesh may be made from pre-galvanized wire or hot-dip galvanized after welding, and those routes perform differently at weld intersections, edges, and in corrosive conditions. The RFQ should identify the coating route instead of using only the word galvanized.

Quote life-cycle cost, not just mesh cost

  • State whether the mesh will be used indoors, outdoors, or in washdown conditions.
  • Confirm whether later painting, powder coating, or framing will be added.
  • Ask for zinc route, coating evidence, and packing suitable for the finish.

The better option is the one that meets service life and maintenance targets with clear coating logic.
