Food-grade claims should be supported by material and process evidence

Buyers often ask for food-grade wire mesh, but that phrase alone is not enough for sourcing. The supplier still needs to know the stainless grade, surface finish, weld or cut condition, cleaning expectation, and whether the part will directly contact product or only support process equipment.

Compliance depends on both alloy and fabrication condition

Even when 304 or 316 stainless is selected, burrs, trapped contamination, or unsuitable finishing can create problems in hygienic applications. Buyers should ask what certificates are available and how the mesh is cleaned and protected before packing.

State the compliance expectation early

• Confirm whether the mesh is for direct food contact, screening, or support.
• Ask for material traceability, surface condition, and cleaning status.
• Check whether certificates or test reports are needed before shipment.

Food-grade sourcing works better when buyers define both the material requirement and the hygienic handling requirement in the RFQ.
