Perforated Metal Thickness vs Hole Size: What Buyers Need to Balance

Compare manufacturability, open area, strength, and flatness when selecting hole size and sheet thickness for perforated metal.

Hole size and thickness cannot be chosen independently

Buyers often send perforated sheet RFQs with a target hole size but no thought about thickness ratio. In production, the relationship between sheet thickness and hole dimension affects whether the pattern can be punched cleanly, how much burr appears, and whether the panel stays flat after fabrication.

Open area, strength, and manufacturability pull in different directions

Small holes on thick sheet may reduce manufacturability or increase tooling cost, while large holes on thin sheet may weaken the panel. The correct balance depends on airflow, screening function, cosmetic face quality, structural span, and finishing route.

Quote with the actual use case in mind

  • State hole type, size, pitch, thickness, material, and sheet dimensions together.
  • Confirm whether deburring, flattening, or coating is required after punching.
  • Ask if the design is near the practical tooling limit before final approval.

Good perforated metal sourcing happens when the buyer balances function and manufacturability at the RFQ stage.
